Good Sleeping Environments for Babies and children.

It is important to keep babies and children's bedrooms a calm, peaceful place, where they feel relaxed and comfortable.

Have subtle, soft and mellow decoration.

Keep energising, distracting toys in another room.

Have mobiles above the change mat rather than cot.

Keep the cot/bed free from toys, even soft toys, apart from a comforter if they have one.

Invest in some good blackout blinds. It is much healthier for everyone to sleep in the dark as we receive better quality sleep. Due to the dark allowing our bodies to release melatonin, a hormone which naturally promotes sleep. They will also help to prevent early wake ups.

Have a comfortable chair or place to sit to be able to feed little ones, read stories and have a cuddle before going into cot/bed to sleep.

Think about lighting, can you make it more soothing and subdued while doing bedtime routine. For example have a dimmer, lower strength bulbs, just a lamp or a lampshade with more coverage.

Ensure the room is a comfortable temperature, between 16 - 20 Celsius, 60.8 - 68 Fahrenheit is advisable.

If your little ones are still struggling you can try a few extra things-

Playing white noise or very gentle lullaby's as they go to sleep. Babies find it comforting as they spent their time in the womb listening to gentle muffled noises. There are many different white noise machines to buy, portable ones can be useful so you can take it out and about for daytime naps.

Creating a specific bedtime smell using a diffuser. lavender is good, it is a calming, sleep inducing aromatherapy oil. You can add a couple of drops to a muslin when out and about.
